24 Local Semifinalists - 2009
The 2nd Annual Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Awards Celebration was held on May 8 at the Jim Rouse Theatre at Wilde Lake High School in Columbia, Md. During the event, Wendy Panor of Queen Anne’s County was named statewide winner from the five finalists. The other four finalists were:
- Mark Lewis, Baltimore County;
- James Carroll, Calvert County;
- Brian Barron, Frederick County; and
- Ann English, Montgomery County.
In a surprise announcement, Kristen Ruiz of Prince George’s County was named the first recipient of the JoAnne L. Carter Memorial Award. This award was conceived in honor of JoAnne L. Carter, Deputy State Superintendent for the Maryland State Department of Education, who was lost to cancer on February 25, 2009. Ms. Carter was dedicated to providing the very best education to all children. A parent herself, she also was a staunch advocate for parental involvement in education and was intimately involved with the Comcast Parent Involvement Matters Awards in its first year. The JoAnne L. Carter Memorial Award will be given annually to a parent that exemplifies all that she held dear.
The twenty-four semifinalists are as follows:

- Jemima Clark – Denton Elementary School, Caroline County Public Schools
- Laurie Long – North Carroll High School, Carroll County Public Schools
- Kathy Joseph – Cecil County School System, Cecil County Public Schools
- Kristina Gozzi – J.P. Ryon Elementary School, Charles County Public Schools
- Valerie Jordan – Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, Dorchester County Public Schools
- Brian Barron – Myersville Elementary School, Frederick County Public Schools
- Christine Brenneman – Grantsville Elementary School, Garrett County Public Schools
- Mark Daghir – Darlington Elementary School, Harford County Public Schools
