Media Alert: Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, February 25

Baltimore, MD (February 21, 2014)

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, February 25, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the State Board room.  Items on this month’s agenda include the following: 

9:55 a.m.         National Title I Distinguished Schools
The State Board will recognize the State’s newest Title I Distinguished Schools: Baltimore City’s New Song Academy and Prince George’s County’s Robert R. Gray Elementary.

10:10 a.m.       School Safety
The State Board will hear an overview of the organization and operations of the new Maryland Center for School Safety established last year.  Board members will be joined by Edward Clarke, a long-time law enforcement official, who is the Center’s first executive director.

10:45 a.m.       Student Discipline
The State Board will review the “Report on Best Practices in School Discipline,” to be released at the meeting.  The report outlines ideas for local school systems to consider when attempting to improve student behavior.

2 p.m.              National Teacher of the Year Finalist
The State Board will congratulate Baltimore County teacher Sean McComb, Maryland’s current State Teacher of the Year, who recently was selected as one of four finalists for National Teacher of the Year.

2:15 p.m.         Transition from the High School Assessments to the PARCC Exams
The State Board will consider adopting the framework for transitioning from the current High School Assessments to the PARCC High School Assessments.
