Media Alert: Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, March 25

Baltimore, MD (March 21, 2014)

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 25, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the State Board room.  Items on this month’s agenda include the following: 

9:55 a.m.         Early Childhood Development
The State Board will take a look at the results from the 2013-14 Maryland School Readiness Report, based on information collected through the Maryland Model for School Readiness.  In addition, the State Board will hear a report on progress being made on Maryland’s Race to the Top-Early Learning Challenge Grant.

9:40 a.m.         Transition to Maryland’s College and Career-Ready Standards
The State Board will hear a report on a survey of teachers and administrators regarding the State’s transition to the new standards built on the Common Core State Standards.  The survey was conducted by the Center for Application and Innovation Research in Education at Towson University.

10:00 a.m.       ESEA Waiver
The State Board is scheduled to act on a plan to request from the U.S. Department of Education an extension of its implementation timeline for using state assessment data in educator evaluations.  MSDE staff presented the extension plan to the State Board last month.

10:45 a.m.       School Year Waiver Requests
The State Board is scheduled to approve the process that will be used for considering requests to waive the 180-instructional day requirement for public schools for the 2013-14 academic year.
