Media Alert: Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, April 28 - Cancelled

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its regular meeting on Tuesday, April 28, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. It will be held in the State Board room on the 7th floor beginning at 9 a.m.

Items on the agenda include the following:

9:10 a.m.         Computer Science
The State Board will hear a report on expanding access to computer science in Maryland public schools. State and local officials will outline efforts to build a complete P-12 computer science program, benefitting from the assistance of a variety of outside partnerships. Dr. Kimberly Hill, Superintendent of the Charles County Public Schools, and Pat Yongpradit, director of education for Code.org, will join in the discussion.

10:30 a.m.       U.S. Senate Youth Program
The State Board will recognize students involved in the United States Senate Youth Program, a national initiative to provide opportunities for students interested in public service careers.  Richard Yarrow, from Richard Montgomery High School in Montgomery County, and Matthew Keating from Atholton High School in Howard County, are this year’s delegates.

11:20 a.m.       Race to the Top
The State Board will hear progress reports on both the Race to the Top Early Learning Challenge grant and the primary Race to the Top grant.  Margo Sipes, executive director of the Downtown Baltimore Childcare Center, and Howard County kindergarten teacher Laura Brown will join in the discussion about improvements in the State’s early learning programs made possible by the federal funding.
