To celebrate the hard work and commitment of school nutrition professionals, the School Nutrition Association (SNA) organizes School Nutrition Employee Week, which this year occurs during the week of May 5 through May 9. The initiative provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff, and communities to thank those nutritional professionals who help make a difference by planning and offering healthy meals to over 30 million of America’s students each school day.

School nutrition employees continually encourage students to select the new, healthier choices in school meals, which must follow strict federal, state, and local regulations.  For many children, school lunch is the most nutritious meal of their day, which includes low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein while meeting limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats.  Maryland schools operating the National School Lunch Program serve meals to approximately 400,000 students each day. In addition, over 200 Maryland schools have been awarded recognition in the HealthierUS Schools Challenge, a voluntary initiative recognizing schools whose foodservice staff and educators work together to meet a higher standard for promotion of nutrition, physical education, and physical activity.

The School Nutrition Association (SNA) is a national, nonprofit professional organization representing school nutrition professionals across the country. Founded in 1946, SNA and its members are dedicated to making healthy school meals and nutrition education available to all students.
