Press Release: Maryland State Department Of Education To Honor Excellence In Career And Technology Education

Top Secondary and Postsecondary Programs Recognized

The Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) tomorrow will honor outstanding performance in secondary and postsecondary Career and Technology Education (CTE) at the 2015 Awards of Excellence at the Holiday Inn Inner Harbor Hotel.  The event gets underway at 4:30 pm.

Maryland’s CTE Awards of Excellence program is sponsored by MSDE and recognizes business partners, teachers and others creating opportunities for students to learn about and prepare for careers. These awardees are sponsoring internships, mentoring students as they complete real-world projects, and creating Maryland’s high-skilled future workforce.  As a result of their leadership and contribution to CTE programs, Maryland students are better prepared for careers in engineering, biomedical sciences, hospitality management, criminal justice, and computer science. 

This year’s award winners represent outstanding contributions to CTE programs from across the state and include:

  • Worcester County:  Outstanding Business Partnership – Secondary – Atlantic General Hospital Partnership with Worcester Technical High School
  • Montgomery County:  Outstanding Business Partnership – Post Secondary – Comfort Inn Hotel - Shady Grove Partnership with Montgomery College
  • Harford County:  Outstanding Career and Technology Education Program – Secondary – Biomedical Sciences Program Bel Air High School, Harford County Public Schools
  • Harford County:  Outstanding Career and Technology Education Program – Postsecondary – Information Assurance and Cybersecurity Degree Program, Harford Community College
  • St. Mary’s County:  Outstanding Change Agent –  Secondary – Ann Johnson, Internship Liaison, St. Mary’s County Public Schools
  • Frederick County:  Outstanding Change Agent – Postsecondary – Robin Shusko, Program Manager, Police Science Frederick Community College
  • Frederick County:  Outstanding Career Technology Student Organization – SkillsUSA – Frederick County Career and Technology Center, Frederick County Public Schools
  • Talbot County:  Distinguished Service Award – Secondary – Garnette Hines, Interactive Media ProductionInstructor Talbot County Public Schools
  • Baltimore County:  Distinguished Service Award – Postsecondary – Jack McLaughlin, Department Chair, Information Technology, Community College of Baltimore County – Catonsville Campus
  • Baltimore County:  Outstanding CTE Marketing Campaign – Secondary - Office of Career and Technology Education, Baltimore County Public Schools

Each of the CTE Awards listed above are judged based on program quality and student outcomes.  The change agent award recognizes leadership for innovative change in CTE programs and focuses on goals of change, the change process, and overall results. The CTE career technology student organization award honors a chapter of a CTE student leadership organization for providing growth opportunities and emphasizing educational and career development of chapter members as a result of participation in the organization’s activities. 

The business partnerships award is presented to a business that has established a strong working partnership with a secondary or postsecondary institution in order to support, promote, and improve CTE programs. The results of this partnership benefit the school, community, and business. The distinguished service award honors individuals who have demonstrated a high level of leadership, vision, and achievement in CTE. The Outstanding CTE Marketing Campaign award recognizes an outstanding multi-platform, comprehensive approach in promoting the benefits of CTE programs.
