First State Summer Programs for 2015 Set to Launch

The Center for Future Engineers: Robot Design at Frostburg State University; The Center for the Physics of Solar and Wind Power at Frostburg State University; and the Baltimore City Community College Center for Biotechnology and Forensic Science are the first three Maryland summer center programs to be offered for 2015.
                                                           
The 2015 Maryland Summer Centers Program continues a 48-year commitment at the State level to provide summer educational opportunities for Maryland’s gifted and talented students. The program, coordinated through the Maryland State Department of Education, in partnership with public and nonpublic agencies, provides Maryland’s diverse gifted and talented student population with advanced, rigorous, experiential learning opportunities that nurture these students’ talents and abilities within unique learning environments. Nine centers will be held this summer.

  • The Center for Future Engineers: Robot Design will teach students how to build and program real robots.  Students in this residential program for grades 9-12 will visit engineering and physics labs and discuss career possibilities with professors.  The Center is funded by Northrop Grumman, Maryland Space Business Roundtable, and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.

  • The Center for the Physics of Solar and Wind Power will delve into electricity, power, and energy.  Students in this residential program for grades 7-9 will work with miniature solar panels and a model windmill to learn the fundamentals of converting sunlight and wind into electricity. Sophisticated lab technology to be used includes computer-assisted data collection, a 40-foot wind tunnel, and a fully instrumented hybrid solar-wind electrical system. The Center is funded by Northrop Grumman and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation

  • Baltimore City Community College Center for Biotechnology and Forensic Science will allow students to follow evidence, perform DNA analysis and solve a variety of mysteries just like the professionals.  The nonresidential program for students in grades 8-9 will use a state-of-the-art laboratory environment for learning fundamental biotechnology and forensic science techniques.  This new center is funded by the Baltimore City Community College.
