Baltimore, MD (August 18, 2015)

The Baltimore Orioles this week will recognize top Maryland summer readers in a special celebration prior to a big league game.

Several children—representing the nearly 200,000 involved in the Maryland Public Library Summer Reading Program for 2015—will take the field before the first pitch of Thursday night’s game against the Minnesota Twins.  Maryland Assistant State Superintendent for Library Development and Services Irene Padilla will take part in the ceremony.

Participants registered at their local public libraries, read books, and participated in classes and workshops.  Just as important, the children had fun while learning.  The Orioles supported the summer reading program by donating 5,000 tickets to Maryland Public Library Branches.

The Maryland Public Library Summer Reading Program is a cooperative project of local public libraries in all 23 Maryland counties and Baltimore City, the Maryland State Department of Education’s Division of Library Development and Services, and the national Collaborative Summer Library Program.  The State program is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Sciences.
