Media Alert: Maryland State Board of Education to Meet on Tuesday, August 26

The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, August 26, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore.  The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the State Board room, and is scheduled to run for a half day.  Items on this month’s agenda include the following: 

9:35 a.m.         Sports Safety
The State Board will hear an update from the Medical Advisory Committee to the Maryland Public School Athletic Association. The MPSSAA established the Medical Advisory Committee composed of family practice physicians, neurologists, orthopedists, dermatologists, certified athletic trainers, and others, to provide guidance designed to improve the safety of students engaged in interscholastic athletics.

11:05 a.m.       Graduation Requirements
The State Board is scheduled to act on planned changes to the Maryland high school graduation requirements, including the addition of a fourth mathematics course to be required at the high school level. The changes were first proposed in April.

3:10 p.m.         Race to the Top
The State Board will hear its regular monthly update on the progress being made on MSDE’s 54 Race to the Top grant projects.  In addition, the State Board will hear a report from the Center for Application and Innovation Research in Education (CAIRE) on the implementation of Maryland’s College and Career Ready Standards.

3:45 p.m.         Board Meeting Dates
The State Board will adopts its meeting calendar for 2015.
