Baltimore, MD (September 11, 2015)

Next time you tune in to the Baltimore Orioles radio broadcast you may hear a familiar call coming from an unfamiliar announcer.

MSDE has partnered with the Orioles and Johns Hopkins University’s Center for Technology in Education to produce “Kids Call” segments prior to select broadcasts on the Orioles radio network.  In the unique segments, children from Maryland EXCELS quality-rated child care programs re-live famous play-by-play calls for the radio audience.

For example, preschoolers Andrew and Rachel this Sunday will give their version of the call that ended the 1983 World Series with an Orioles victory.  Andrew is from the Kid’s Campus Early Learning Center in Calvert County and Rachel attends Kid’s Town Learning Center in Montgomery County. The segment is scheduled to air at approximately 7:15 p.m. -- about 45 minutes prior to game time.

Two segments, from David (who attends Andrea Campbell’s family child care) and Abby (who attends Woods Child Development Center), and from Ayden (who attends family child care provider Cathy Ross) and Nayah (who attends family provider Jayce Forrester), have already aired on the Orioles’ network. All these programs are located in Anne Arundel County.

Following this Sunday’s “Kid’s Call” segment will be:

  • Sunday, September 20 - Asante and Nico will replicate Eddie Murray’s 500th Home Run call at approximately 12:25 p.m. Asante attends the Nia Imani Academy of Excellence in Charles County, while Nico attends Greenbelt Children’s Center in Prince George’s County.
  • Sunday, September 27 - Jacob and Zoe will replicate Cal Ripken’s record-setting 2,131 consecutive game streak call at approximately 12:50 p.m. Jacob and Zoe attend family child care provider Dawn Postowski in Harford County.
  • Sunday, October 4 - Stephen and Sammy will replicate the call from the 2014 American League Division Series victory at approximately 2:25 p.m.  Stephen attends South Shore Elementary School Age Child Care in Anne Arundel County, while Sammy goes to Our Lady Mount Carmel in Baltimore County.

“Kids Call” segments spotlight the Maryland EXCELS program, a voluntary quality rating and improvement system for child care and public prekindergarten programs.  More than 5,000 facilities are participating in Maryland EXCELS, and more than 2,000 have published a quality rating and are searchable on the Maryland EXCELS website and the mobile app.
