The Maryland State Board of Education will hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday, October 28, at the Maryland State Department of Education, 200 W. Baltimore Street, Baltimore. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the State Board room. Items on this month’s agenda include the following:
9:10 a.m. Teacher and Principal Evaluations
The State Board will be presented with a report on the first full year of Teacher and Principal Evaluations. All 22 local systems that signed on to Maryland’s Race to the Top grant program evaluated their teachers and principals in 2014 on models that followed State parameters.
9:30 a.m. Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Strategic Plan
The State Board will receive Maryland’s STEM strategic plan and learn about the vision of STEM education and how its expansion will strengthen the State’s success moving forward.
10:30 a.m. School Discipline Report
The Council of State Governments’ Justice Center will provide a presentation on the “School Discipline Consensus Report,” which details national data and best practices for keeping students in school and out of the juvenile justice system. The Maryland State Board of Education has been among the nation’s leaders in reforming school discipline regulations and practices.
11:30 a.m. High School Graduation Requirements
The State Board will consider adjustments to graduation requirements during the transition to the new high school tests developed by the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career (PARCC).
2:40 p.m. Teacher Staffing
The State Board will review the 2014-16 Maryland Teacher Staffing Report and will be asked to approve critical shortage areas in content, geographic location, race, and gender. The critical shortage areas provide the basis for a number of incentive programs for educators.
