Baltimore, MD (November 17, 2014)

Maryland State Superintendent Lillian M. Lowery will visit two school systems this week to celebrate American Education Week (November 16-22). She and Congressman Elijah Cummings were invited to visit the Baltimore School for the Arts at 10 a.m. today. On Tuesday, Dr. Lowery will visit three Cecil County County public schools with superintendent D’Ette W. Devine.

This morning, Dr. Lowery released the following statement:

“We have an opportunity to recognize and celebrate student success in every corner of Maryland as we begin American Education Week. This week, and every week of the year, we also should honor the contributions of our teachers, school leaders and families who work together to help prepare Maryland students to be ready for college and career opportunities after graduation. The quality and value of public education has never been higher in Maryland.

“Maryland students have scored at the top on national exams, graduation rates are at an all-time high, and our schools provide a well-rounded education for all students. We celebrate past achievements and recognize that today’s students require an education that prepares them for the future. It should encourage us all that Maryland public schools are preparing world-class students with more rigorous standards, meaningful assessment, and continuous support for educators. Our schools are preparing students to meet the needs of local employers and to be competitive in a global economy.

“Everyone has a role to play in the success of our schools and I encourage all Maryland residents to find a way to support your local public schools. They are to be commended for their steadfast commitment to meeting the needs of our State’s greatest asset – our children.”
